Our Chess.com tournaments have had a great turnout. If you didn’t get the information before, here it is again.
The Cincinnati Chess Club holds live tournaments on Chess.com on Thursdays and Saturdays. They are for online CCC members only. There’s no cost to play, or to join the online CCC.
Thursday tournaments start at 7:00 p.m. The most common format is 4 rounds of G10/0, but may vary.
Saturday tournaments start at 5:00 p.m. and are typically 6 rounds of G5/0 (fewer rounds if not enough players).
The latest announcements, formats and winners will be posted in the online CCC news (in the club area at Chess.com).
For the first five Thursday tournaments (April 9 through May 7), we will have a total of $20 in prizes, with $10 for the top and $10 for lower ratings. For April 16, the lower cutoff will be 1600, and will be set up as a second tournament. Ratings are determined pre-tournament, except for unrateds, which will be determined post-tournament. Only Cincinnati-area residents can win prizes, which are paid through PayPal. To determine prizes, computer tiebreaks will be used. No one may win a cash prize two weeks in a row, nor more than twice during the five weeks. The winner of the tournament also helps determine the format for the next tournament.
To play in a tournament, members can go to Play >> Live Chess, and click on the Tournaments tab. Find the name with “Cincinnati Chess Club” in it, find the one that is over 1600 or under 1600 according to your blitz rating (Thursday tournament only), click on the name, then click on Join. You can join up to an hour before the tournament starts. The tournament is started by computer and cannot be delayed, so try to join at least a few minutes before the tournament is scheduled to start. You can join late, but will get 0 points for the missed rounds. You can also withdraw before the end of the tournament, but no half-point byes are given.
Note that it is free to join and participate in the online Cincinnati Chess Club. However, please consider renewing your membership or joining the main Cincinnati Chess Club to maintain our economic health. You can renew or join online at www.cincinnatichessclub.com – under “About,” click on “Memberships.”
